Damon Gudaitis is an independent marketing automation and technology consultant and is principal of Caret Juice Marketing. He works with small businesses to optimize their investment in technology by suggesting inexpensive additions and making the most of their existing tools.

Damon graduated from the UBC/DAA Award of Achievement in Digital Analytics in 2016. We spoke to him about this ever-evolving field, his career, and what fascinates him now.

How did you benefit from the UBC/DAA Digital Analytics online program?
I got a lot of value from the program but two benefits really stand out for me.

The program prepares you not just for an analyst role but also one in management. Learning how to set the right goals and choose the right key performance indicators are business skills with broad applications.

I also learned how to build consensus in a business setting where affecting change can be difficult. Building an analytical culture, setting achievable goals, overcoming objections, and cultivating allies are all valuable skills with applications beyond analytics.

What was your biggest takeaway?
One of the learning outcomes of the program is about setting clear goals. Once you set the right goals for any marketing activity, all that remains is execution. And if you know how to measure the campaign, you know how to manage it.

What was your favorite course?
Creating and Managing the Analytical Business Culture. Learning to be an evangelist, getting people on your side, spreading the analytics love: all incredibly important, not just with analytics, but for marketing technology in general.

How did the program help you in your career? How are you applying the skills you learned?
When I started the program I was strictly in search engine optimization. The program has helped me grow as a marketer. I’ve learned how to measure marketing programs, which has helped me branch out into marketing automation, and now marketing operations.

You’re a member of the Digital Analytics Association. What do you enjoy most about being a member?
The member-only webinars and online forums. I can learn about new approaches, techniques, and technologies that help me do my job better.

The early founding members put in a lot of effort. It takes leadership to grow an association in a new industry like analytics. I hope the DAA will continue to build and nurture an open and caring community.
