New York eMetrics Summit WiA session: Making Shift Happen

By Sangah Bae posted 11-01-2017 02:46 PM

eMetrics Summit in New York just had its finale. It was the last summit in New York (for the foreseeable future at least) and, like always, the #Event was full of great speakers, brilliant talents to network with, and pro tips to bring back.

Among those, there was DAA's #WomeninAnalytics lunch session with @Mary Owusu. Mary provided an insightful speech on 'Making Shift Happen'. She delivered her entire presentation on how to empower your life as females in analytics and how to participate as actively in the process as male counterparts.

She started the conversation with a personal touch, her brief history and life changing moments. Based on this, she provided pro-tips from her real-life experiences throughout the presentation.

Mary pointed out some gender and race-based inequalities, not to point fingers at the other side, but to use as supporting material to convince both genders that they stand to gain from diversity and inclusion. To increase diversity and promote inclusion, Mary provided 4 main ideas to empower ourselves as women: to be relevant with your interest, to network all the time, to stop using words that diminish your power, and to resist the pressure to do it all and have it all. Then she moved on to point out differences in the views on gender inequality and called for active participation from men.

A speech like this at an industry conference is a big step forward. Often, well-being or quality of life questions are overlooked at conferences. Women in Analytics is spearheading the effort for equality, and invite all participants to join – regardless of their labels – to promote an environment where inclusion is celebrated. DAA has many groups and opportunities for members to connect, based on interest and geo location, and Women in Analytics certainly is a special one. I look forward to see more of empowering stories, events and activities.

I was so inspired by Mary's honest and heartfelt talk - and many others (both men and women) came up to me later to thank us for bringing Mary to this event.  I will always remember the video, showcasing how women say "sorry" too often when it is unnecessary.
