San Francisco eMetrics Summit WiA session

eMetrics Summits have always provided quality programs where analytics professionals can bring home industry best practices and new ideas that were sparked by conversations with peers. The tremendous focus on women professionals within the industry where majority of the speakers were women is what made the San Francisco eMetrics Summit special this year! The DAA Women in Analytics (WiA) Community sponsored a luncheon at the eMetrics Summit. I found it quite interesting that many men asked if they were invited to the luncheon, and the answer is, “Yes, of course!” WiA is about gender equality in the profession and it is important for men to participate in the conversations to help female analysts strive. All are welcome.

Carla Borsoi, VP of Marketing, Nima, was our speaker at the WiA luncheon. My impression of Carla is that she is very out-spoken, confident, determined, and yet very warm and approachable. She shared her experiences on how she moved from company to company, such as AOL, Ask.com, and BabyCenter. The key ingredient of her success, aside from the value she provides the companies, was her strength in nurturing relationships with others. Throughout her career Carla received help from supportive men and women, and she makes consistent effort to nurture those relationships. I also admire Carla for having the clarity in and asking for what she wants in her career. In fact, when a male audience asked Carla what advice she would give to women specifically, she answered that women need to start asking for what they want. Women simply aren’t doing that enough!

DAA provides many opportunities for members to connect and nurture relationships with peers within the industry, such as local events, Symposia, and the DAA Community. Please take advantage of these channels and continue to help each other strive!
