Blake Griffin Dunk Videos | Reddit Traffic Case study

By Zaid Ammari posted 12-04-2013 08:10 PM

If you watch basketball, then you already know that Blake griffin is infamous for his highflying dunks and alley-oops. His popularity & skills have been growing tremendously since he joined the clippers in 2009. His jumping ability and continuous improvement earned him “Western Conference Player of the year” for 2013.

Watching his dunk videos and clipper games inspired me to create this HTML5 website, which is highly dynamic and offers users a new interactive way of viewing his amazing dunk videos. Watch Blake Griffin’s top dunks here. I made sure the website contained video tracking as well as general engagement metrics to understand how users are interacting with the “canvas” and specific videos. Google Analytics and event trackers were implemented.

Being in the digital marketing field for so many years, I contacted one of my close friends and had him post the link using his Reddit account (which he is well know for). The link was shared on a highly relevant sub-Reddit in the middle of the day via a text link. IMMEDIATELY after posting the link, the site received 1,632 unique visitors with an additional 1,871 unique visitors the next day. Total visitors to the site reached 4,700 visitors within the 6-day period.

So… what did we learn about Reddit and those 4,700 unique visitors?

-       1) Reddit traffic lasted for a total of 6 days, with the 2nd day providing the highest amount of traffic.

-       2) 65% of users used Google Chrome to enter, with Firefox coming in second representing only 23%.

-       3) Users visited the site only on the day they found it. No users returned the next day. {Days since last visit = 0, represented 98% of traffic}

-       4) There are about 12 dunk videos on the site. On average users saw 3 videos before leaving.

-       5) Pau Gasol’s (1) video was the most popular video viewed 17% of the time. You can watch it here

-       6) Only 1% of users commented or shared again via Reddit/Share this.

-       7) Desktop users represented 97% of total visitors.

Note: There is no data on the email/twitter feed, because those were added recently.
